We Work For Health Executive Director Dan Leonard issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s call for the codification of Most Favored Nation price controls during his State of the Union Address.
“Last night, we heard again from the Administration about their plans to lower healthcare costs for American families – an admirable goal that has remained a priority for President Trump. We Work For Health shares the Administration's urgent desire to address this challenge, but we must reiterate that importing prices from foreign countries is not the solution. Codification of the Most Favored Nation (MFN) pricing proposal will erode the very innovation ecosystem that has made America the world leader in developing life-saving treatments.
“Since January 2025, the life sciences industry has committed nearly $600 billion in new U.S. investment to drive research and development, expand manufacturing and create jobs nationwide. MFN pricing would capsize this momentum, restricting patient access to new therapies and weakening our competitive position as China works to dominate U.S. leadership in life sciences innovation. Adopting failed price control models that have left patients in Europe and elsewhere with fewer treatment options and longer wait times would hand China the advantage it seeks at the expense of American patients. We also know price controls fail to lower patients’ out-of-pocket spending.
"We commend the Administration's action against insurance companies and pharmacy benefit manager middlemen, who have long driven up costs and obscured how healthcare dollars are spent. Meaningful healthcare reform should bring accountability to those most responsible for unaffordable care while preserving the innovation pipeline that improves and saves American lives.”
