New Data Reveals Strong Economic Impact of Texas Biopharmaceutical Industry
Biopharma footprint in Texas includes more than 300,000 jobs and $95 billion in economic output
AUSTIN, TEXAS – We Work For Health Texas is today sharing new data from vendors across the Lone Star State that shows the important impact the state’s biopharmaceutical industry has on local and national economies.
Vendors play a critical role in equipping America’s biopharmaceutical research companies with the services and supplies they need to propel innovation, ignite research and development, and deliver optimal care for patients. In addition to traditional indicators, such as employment and output, vendors of diverse backgrounds and sizes contribute significantly to the industry’s complete economic footprint.
We Work For Health’s new vendor and supplier expenditure data offers insight into the breadth and depth of the industry’s impact in each state – from those who provide lab equipment and machinery, to contract researchers, to those who handle cleaning, transportation and maintenance services.
“The importance of our vendor and supplier relationships in Texas cannot be overstated,” said Victoria Ford, President and CEO, Texas Healthcare and Bioscience Institute (THBI). “These companies are a crucial component of the ecosystem that continues to provide tens of thousands of good-paying jobs across the state and that helps drive the innovative R&D necessary to deliver the next generation of treatments.”
Key Findings
The data comprises 2022 vendor and supplier information from 15 biopharmaceutical companies in 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, along with jobs and economic impact for the industry as a whole. According to We Work For Health’s analysis, the impact in Texas includes:
2,455 total state vendor relationships and $2.57 billion in total state vendor spending.
49,165 Texas jobs directly supported by the industry and 309,628 total jobs supported overall, which ranks in the top five across all U.S. states.
$95 billion in economic output.
“We are passionate about building and delivering complex, sustainable healthcare and R&D construction projects for our customers, and when this passion can be amplified by also helping patients, it’s truly a win-win,” said Jose Rivera, Life Science Regional Leader for DPR Construction. “We are proud to collaborate with and support the biotech and life science sectors in Texas to help bring lifesaving medicines to patients.”
